The Education at Home Resource Page
I have always kept my
children home and out of Government schools for a variety of reasons. As
a Christian , Libertarian, and Anti-pop-culture person, I felt that the factory model
schools in general are NOT the model most appropriate to encouraging thinking
human development or positive emotional health. In Addition, I
LIKE my kids and sending them off at the tender age of 5 or
6 to be gone for the major part of their waking hours, and coming home at the
crankiest part of the day seemed rather disruptive in having a positive
relationship.
When I first began the
journey into non-institutionalizing my children, there was not much in the way
of support, information, or encouragement. This was before the days of internet
and pc use being common, before huge curriculum fairs and monster home school
organizations, and in Virginia even before a "home
school" law was in existence. Of course I do not adhere to the homeschool law~~My family remains under the Religious Exemption Statute as we believe that the parent rather than the state has the authority and responsibility over the children. But no matter. Things rolled along, life went
on, and my oldest graduated by the Grace of God from The University at age
18.
My second was a "late bloomer", one of these
children that just needed some extra time to get moving, and with visual
problems that needed surgical correction around age 9 there was nopoint in
pushing. Alas, she fell behind, failing to get her B.A,
from The University until this
year at the old age of 20. Of course, a college education is not for everyone.
Just don't let the nay-sayers tell you being home will damage the chances of
being accepted at a "good" college. Tain't true.
I have eight children, and
plan on having them home with me until they begin expanding their horizons at
the local community college(PVCC)~~~an excellent resource for yoots that cry out for
real school in their journey to feel normal. Nowadays there is a plethora of
information, helps, encouragement, support and curriculum choices. I will give
some of my favorite links, but there are many more than I could possibly list!
But hey, gotta start somewhere. So here goes a bunch of excellent
links.
